Navaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in September and October to honor the triumph of good over evil. Navaratri means nine nights in Sanskrit. This is the time when Goddess Durga descends from heaven to bless her beloved devotees. It is celebrated over 9 nights and on the 9th day, devotees observe a fast and offer til or sesame seeds. This is believed to protect the devotee and his family.
For some, it is a time of religious reflection and fasting, while for others it is a time for dancing and feasting.
