  • Coriander
  • Cumin
  • Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Black pepper
  • Cinnamon (or cassia)
  • Nutmeg

Garam means “hot” and masala means “spices” and it is usually gluten-free! This spice is India’s equivalent for French’s herbes de Provence and the Chinese’s five-spice powder. There is no specific recipe or spices in Garam Masala, in the Punjab region, it often has black pepper and focuses on aromatic and sweet spices. In Southern India, red chilies are added to make it spicy.

If you’re going to use it on your dish, it is usually added near the end of cooking because it becomes bitter if cooked too long. Popular Indian recipes cooked with garam masala includes:

  • Chicken Curry
  • Chana Masala
  • Butter Chicken
  • Aloo Gobi
